Install Git

Git is a version control system (VCS). Software developers use it to manage the projects they’re working on. It will be used in this course to manage milestones of project development as well as to push code to the app hosting service Heroku. Here are the steps to install it.

On a Mac

Instructions for setting up Git on a Mac.

  1. Open Git Mac Install
  2. If the download doesn't start automatically, click on the download link
  3. Once downloaded open the .dmg file and follow the instructions to install it
  4. To test the installation, close any open terminals, open a new terminal, and type git; it should return the help file for git

On Windows

Instructions for setting up Git on Windows.

  1. Open Git Windows Install
  2. If the download doesn't start automatically, click on the download link
  3. Once downloaded open the .exe file and follow the instructions to install it. NOTE: there is a part of the setup that provides 3 options for Adjusting the PATH environment. The option selected in this course was 'Run GIT from the Windows Command Prompt'. Keep all other settings at their defaults unless you're confident in what you're doing
  4. To test the installation, close any open terminals, open a new terminal, and type git - it should return the help file for git

Set Your Username & Email

Before being able to use Git you'll need to set your username and email address in the tool's configuration file. You can read more about why this is needed on Git's Getting Started guide.

Open a terminal or command prompt and type in the following, replacing the values with your personal information.
